Spending time together is important to most families. While many families cannot afford to travel to exciting destinations or pay hefty admission fees to venues that are nearby, there are still numerous activities that families can enjoy together. When the weather is nice, families can enjoy many low-cost or free activities together. For example, state parks are well maintained and offer families a respite that doesn’t cost very much. You may have to pay an entrance fee, but this is usually on a per car basis, instead of a per person basis. For just a few dollars, you can picnic, cook out, and enjoy many activities in the great outdoors.
Some state parks feature campsites, swimming, and kayak and canoe rental. In many areas of the country, there are special exhibits or certain species that are available only in that area. For example, at Blue Spring State Park near Daytona, Florida, visitors can watch the manatee in the clear spring waters. You can walk through the forest on a boardwalk and see a variety of fish, manatee, and even alligators. The park also offers river cruises, but for a family on a budget, just touring the park and picnicking is a lot of fun and affordable as well.
Taking bike rides together is another favorite family activity that is affordable. Not only is it great exercise, but it gets the entire family out of the house and into the fresh air and sunshine. Families who like to play games can have a lot of fun playing disc golf. For about $20, you can pick up a set of discs and then go to a park that offers the activity. Unlike regular golf, you don’t have to pay to play. Once you buy the equipment, playing the game is free.
Families who are creative can have a lot of fun together, especially during the summer months. Look for free concerts and festivals in your community and look for activities that the whole family will enjoy.
