Children need to start their days off right, especially when it is a school day. One of the most important things a mother can do for her child is to provide a healthy and wholesome breakfast meal for them. Not only will the child grow up knowing that their mother loves them and cares for them but the child may also learn life-long eating habits that will keep their body in shape. Studies have shown that people who do not eat breakfast do not eat well throughout the day and they are more likely to be overweight.
Some healthy choices for breakfast are eggs, cereal and buckwheat pancakes.Try to avoid feeding the child sugary cereals because they are pure simple carbohydrates that will not sustain the child long enough to walk onto the bus. Children are very active at school and must have a good dose of protein if they are expected to concentrate on their learning. In addition, some children become cranky if their blood sugar fluctuates too much and protein is a good defense against that.
Of course, if the child does not like one of these foods they should not be forced to eat them. Parents do not want to encourage finicky behavior in a child, but sometimes a parent needs to be a little flexible. It is worth it in the long run to allow a child to have a non-traditional food for breakfast, such as a peanut butter sandwich or a non-diet protein shake, than to allow the child to go to school hungry.
