Once harnessed, confidence can be one of the most valuable characteristics. Confidence can help your child respect themselves and their abilities. As a parent, you can cultivate bright, confident children who are ready to take on the world.

Be the Example
As a parent, you are one of the main role models for your child. Take charge and become conscious of how you use your words and how you act around your children. Use empowered language, such as “I can do this!” or “Yes, this is possible.” For example, if your child has a question and you don’t know the answer, it’s okay to say “I don’t know.” However, follow this up by taking action toward finding the answer through looking at a book or researching online.

Positive Affirmations
Use positive affirmations on a regular basis. Tell your child that he or she is wonderful. Wish your child an amazing day before sending him or her off to school. Use positive and encouraging language. Parental support can go a long way for your child. Be sure to recognize positive actions, while not rewarding the negative.

Eliminate the Negative
Quit criticizing. As parents, you may succumb to severely criticizing your own child. Offer constructive criticism, along with a helpful solution. That way, your child doesn’t have to take a blow to his or her self-esteem.

Skill Building
A way to build confidence is for a child to build a skill. Find a fun activity for your child to take part in, whether in sports, piano or ballet. Allow your child to learn and observe progress in themselves. Reward your child when progress occurs. A reward can be as simple as a compliment to taking him or her out to a healthy treat.

Reflection
Talk to your child. Ask your child how he or she felt during his day. Solve problems together, especially when it comes to reflecting upon moments of difficulty.
