Going green isn’t just a trend, it’s a lifestyle. Teach your child how to treat and respect the environment. There are many benefits to your child going green. For example, your child is building character by not wasting and using only what he or she needs. Knowing how to limit oneself can be helpful in learning other important life skills, such as budgeting and creating a schedule.

Recycle Bin
Teach your child to use a recycle bin for paper and plastics. Have at least one recycle bin around the house, preferably with the recycle icon on display. The best way to teach your child is by example, so make sure that you are also following the same recycling guidelines that your child is utilizing.

Conservation
Ask your child to only use as much water and light as necessary. Teach your child to turn off faucets and light switches when he or she is not using them. These are wonderful habits to begin early on. Remember, do not force rules upon your child or nag them. Otherwise, your child may associate negative feelings to a positive action. Politely remind them to do something with a lighthearted intention and smile.

Nature Adventure
Go on a nature walk. You can even go as far as visiting the wilderness together. Let your child appreciate nature by showing him or her the beauty of it all. Depending on how old your child is, you can allow them to take part in a camping or hiking trip. During this time, discuss the concept of cause-and-effect with your child. Tell them how one person can make a difference in conserving the environment and that your child’s individual actions count. Allowing your child to recognize how he or she is accountable for helping the environment can be a very empowering moment for your child’s developmental process.
